Rule One R1 Protein — 25g Isolate + Hydrolysate, Informed Choice Certified

105 reviews
Rule One R1 Protein25 grams of protein at around 110 calories, from whey isolate and hydrolysed whey isolate only. Informed Choice certified, no whey concentrate, and priced below most proteins built the same way.Your shop-floor note has this right on all three counts, and the third one is the interesting part. The value argument, spelled outProtein powders separate on what fraction of whey they use, and it drives both quality and cost. Whey concentrate is the cheapest fraction — around 80% protein by weight, with the remaining 20% carrying lactose, fat and carbohydrate. Most affordable proteins are built on it Whey isolate is filtered further to strip most of that out. More expensive Hydrolysed whey isolate is partially pre-digested by enzymes into smaller peptides for faster absorption. More expensive again, so most products skip it or add a token amountR1 Protein uses only the second and third of those, and no concentrate at all — while sitting at a price point normally occupied by concentrate blends. That is the whole proposition. You are getting a premium formulation at a mid-range price, which is exactly why it earns your "affordable option" note.Informed Choice certification at this price is genuinely unusualThis is the part most people miss.R1 Protein is Informed Choice certified, meaning it is regularly tested for banned substances by LGC, one of the major sports anti-doping laboratories.Certification costs money — testing fees, batch submissions, ongoing auditing — which is why it usually appears on premium products only. Most proteins at any price carry no certification at all.If you are a tested athlete, that makes this one of the most cost-effective options available to you. If you do not compete it is worth nothing directly — but it is a reasonable proxy for a manufacturer running proper quality control, and it costs you nothing.Run the numbers Protein25g per scoop Calories~110 Carbohydrate~2g Fat0–1g EAAs12g, including 6g naturally occurring BCAAs SourcesWhey isolate + hydrolysed whey isolate Concentrate, creamers, gums, fillersNone SweetenersSucralose, acesulfame potassium CertificationInformed Choice, tested by LGC AllergensMilk, soy (lecithin)12g of EAAs including 6g of BCAAs is the number worth understanding, because those are naturally occurring in the whey rather than added afterwards. That distinction matters. Amino spiking is the practice of adding cheap free-form amino acids like glycine or taurine to inflate nitrogen-based protein tests without supplying usable complete protein. A product can show "25g protein" on a lab test while delivering considerably less usable protein. R1 does not do this, and the naturally occurring EAA figure is how you tell. The full explanation is on our R1 Whey Blend page. Why it mixes so wellYour note mentions mixing, and there is a reason for it.Lecithin is included as an instantising agent. It is not a filler — it is a functional ingredient that lets the powder disperse in water rather than clumping. Isolates without it are notoriously difficult to shake smooth. The absence of gums and creamers also helps. Those thicken a shake but make it harder to dissolve cleanly.Standard or Naturally Flavored? Choose on sweetener alone. If artificial sweeteners do not bother you, this version costs less and performs exactly the same. If you avoid them, pay the difference for the stevia version. How it compares to our other isolates R1 Protein25g / 110 calBest value. Same macros, all well made. R1 is the one to pick if price matters and you still want isolate, hydrolysate and third-party certification. How to mix it One scoop into 6 to 8 ounces of cold water. Less liquid for a thicker shake. Post-workout or any time. The hydrolysate speeds absorption, which matters most after training — though total daily protein matters more than timing. Into oats, yoghurt or smoothies works well. Less suited to baking — pure whey denatures under heat and dries baked goods out. A blend performs better.Who this is for Anyone who wants isolate and hydrolysate without paying a premium price Tested athletes on a budget — Informed Choice certification is rare at this cost People who are lactose sensitive, since isolate removes most of it Anyone cutting: 25g protein for 110 calories is efficient People who have struggled with clumpy proteins Anyone buying protein regularly, where price per tub compoundsWho this is not forIf you avoid artificial sweeteners, buy the Naturally Flavored version — same protein, stevia instead. If you want a thick, creamy shake, isolates are thin by design. A concentrate-led blend or casein gives you that.If you bake with protein, use a blend. It contains soy lecithin — worth noting if you avoid soy, though the amount is small and it is there for mixability. If you have a milk allergy rather than lactose intolerance, no whey is suitable — the allergen is the protein itself. If you want the absolute cheapest protein per gram, a concentrate blend costs less. You are paying here for the isolate, the hydrolysate and the certification.Stack it with: creatine, which mixes in without affecting flavour. See our creatine range.Frequently asked questionsWhat protein does R1 Protein use?Whey protein isolate and hydrolysed whey protein isolate only — no concentrate, creamers, gums or fillers. What does hydrolysed mean? The protein has been partially broken into smaller peptides by enzymes before you drink it, which speeds absorption. It costs more, so most products use little or none.Is it tested for banned substances?Yes — Informed Choice certified and regularly tested by LGC. That is unusual at this price point, since certification is expensive to maintain. What is amino spiking, and does this do it?Adding cheap free-form aminos to inflate nitrogen-based protein tests without supplying usable complete protein. R1 does not — its 12g of EAAs and 6g of BCAAs are naturally occurring in the whey. Why does it mix so easily?Lecithin is included as an instantising agent, and there are no gums or creamers to complicate dispersion. What is the difference from the Naturally Flavored version?Only the sweetener and flavouring. The protein is identical; that version uses stevia and natural flavours and costs more.Is it suitable if I am lactose intolerant?Generally yes — isolate is filtered to remove most lactose. Can I bake with it?You can, but pure whey dries baked goods out. A whey and casein blend suits baking better. Read more

Best of the best

The folks at Coalition Nutrition were kind enough to let me sample this protein for the first time a few years ago, and it's the only one I continue to buy. The price is great. It digests well and the powder dissolves quick and easily in whatever you decide to mix it with. All of the flavors taste amazing!! I recommend this to everyone!

Would totally recommend

I’ve had other coalition products and this one takes the cake ( or salted caramel in my case). It doesn’t get clumpy, tastes great (and sweet so if you have a sweet tooth) and it’s variety is fantastic.

Tastes Great

I got the cookies and cream flavor. I normally stick to chocolate because most vanillas taste weird to me. This one is pretty good though. It has a nice flavor and texture if you mix with milk. I've had it with water and it wasn't as good but still tasted fine.
